  • Pierrot Pinot Grigio

Notes: crisp, white peach, honeydew, minerality

Sarah Bernhardt is one of the greatest actresses of all time. Renowned for her death scenes, she kept a satin-lined coffin in her bedroom in which she would sleep. In this photograph by Nadar, she appears in her role as Pierrot, the pathetic clown of the Commedia dell’Arte that served as the predecessor to the sad clown of the modern era.

Our Pinot Grigio perfectly evokes the gentle, wistful figure of Pierrot – a crisp, refreshing wine with notes of nectarine, honeydew, lime and verbena with hints of minerality and sea salt on the finish. A versatile wine that can complement a wide variety of foods including vegan sushi, pesto gnocchi or caprese salad.

  • Josephine Baker Dry Riesling

Notes: electric, Meyer lemon, green apple

Joséphine Baker is the inspiration for this dry Riesling with notes of white peach and minerality. Joséphine Baker grew up on the streets of St. Louis but became an instant success in Paris. She was often accompanied on stage by her pet cheetah “Chiquita” who wore a diamond collar and would leap down into the orchestra pit to terrorize the musicians. During WWII, Baker worked as a spy for the French Resistance, smuggling information written in invisible ink on her sheet music. Later in life, she became a Civil Rights activist and adopted 12 children from around the world, calling them “The Rainbow Tribe.”

Our 2020 Joséphine Baker Dry Riesling was rated as one of the top 10 Rieslings of Michigan by Decanter Magazine.

  • Afternoon of a Faun Dry Riesling

Notes: unique, apricot, green tea, key lime

Vaslav Nijinsky was one of the greatest dancers of all time, performing with the Ballets Russes in the early 20th century. In 1912, he choreographed and performed in Afternoon of a Faun – now heralded as one of the very first modern ballets and one which shocked audiences of the time with its erotic themes. Inspired by Afternoon of a Faun, we have produced a completely dry Riesling with a round, voluptuous texture, interweaving notes of apricot, tangerine, orange blossoms and green tea with hints of key lime on the finish; a few days of skin contact softening the acidity and intensifying the herbal flavors of this wine. Pair with tofu Pad Thai, coconut curry, or any dish with fresh herbs.

  • Alfred Jarry chardonnay

Notes: Unoaked, tart nectarine, sea salt

Alfred Jarry was an eccentric French playwright who rode around the streets of Paris on his bicycle with his face painted green. If anyone asked for directions, he would pull his revolver on them. At his untimely death at the age of 34, his last request was for a toothpick. He bequeathed his revolver to Picasso, who kept it in a velvet-lined box and would bring it out at parties, saying, “This belonged to the master, Jarry.” Alfred Jarry is the inspiration for this unoaked Chardonnay with notes of tart nectarine, yellow apple and sea salt. Pairs with cheeses, French bread and all things picnic. Evocative of bike rides and sailboats!

Our 2022 Alfred Jarry Chardonnay won a silver medal at the 2023 Michigan Governor’s Cup.

  • Nadar Chardonnay

Notes: lightly oaked, Asian pear, lemon curd, apple compote, hazelnut

Michigan Governor’s Cup gold medal winner, 2025

The Parisian photographer Nadar is notable for his many firsts: the first to photograph the catacombs of Paris; the first to photograph from the air in a hot-air balloon called Le Géant (where he served a gourmet meal of cold chicken and red wine to his passengers); the first to establish air-mail service during the Paris Commune of 1870-71, in which he delivered mail to the besieged Parisians via hot-air balloon; and the first to exhibit the pioneering artwork of the French Impressionists in 1874. In addition to all of these firsts, Nadar maintained a long and illustrious career photographing celebrities of the 19th century. In this studio portrait from 1863, Nadar presents himself riding aloft in a balloon basket, peering into the horizon, top hat nattily perched on his head and binocular at-the-ready.

Nadar the intrepid explorer is the inspiration for our Chardonnay aged sur lies in French oak for 10 months, a wine that will ignite the adventurer in all of us – with its notes of Asian pear, yellow apple, lemon peel, honeydew, toasted hazelnut and baking spices. Pair with potato & caramelized onion tart or grilled pear & pine nut crostini.

  • Fernande Muscat Ottonel

Notes: aromatic, orange blossom, rose, tangerine

Fernande Olivier, or “La Belle Fernande” as she was known, escaped an abusive marriage to strike out on her own and become an artist’s model in Paris. There she met the young Pablo Picasso, and quickly became his first great love and muse. But Fernande refused to let anyone define her, later publishing a memoir describing life in “La Belle Époque.” Fernande is the inspiration for our dry Muscat Ottonel with just a touch of sweetness (0.5% R.S.). A member of the Muscat Vitis vinifera family of grapes popular in the Alsace region, the Muscat Ottonel grape produces an aromatic wine alive with notes of rose petal, orange blossoms, tangerine and mango. Best matched with equally expressive dishes such as Thai or Indian curries.

  • Toulouse Lautrec Meritage

Notes: medium-bodied, silky, raspberry, cherry, cola

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into the French aristocracy but his poor health and short stature led him to lean a Bohemian existence, hanging out at brothels and dance-halls. Toulouse-Lautrec adored wine, even hollowing out his cane to create a slender wine flask to take with him wherever he went. His love of wine was only matched by his love of Japanese culture. This Meritage is a blend of classic Bordeaux style grape varieties – Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – aged one year in American oak, producing a rich, full-bodied wine with notes of ripe plum, black cherry, raspberry and cola. A silky mouthfeel and firm tannins make this the perfect wine to accompany BBQ, beet salad, or Mediterranean stuffed eggplant.

  • Falling Rocket Merlot

    Notes: voluptuous, pomegranate, wild strawberry

Michigan Governor’s Cup silver medal winner, 2025

The American expat James McNeill Whistler left behind his conservative upbringing in Lowell, Massachusetts and sought the stardom of Paris. He exploded onto the scene with his psychological studies of misty landscapes and fraught individuals, pushing painting ever closer to abstraction. When he exhibited his rendition of fireworks exploding in the foggy night sky of London’s Cremorne Gardens, a prominent art critic referred to it as “a pot of paint flung in the public’s face.”

Whistler’s “Falling Rocket” is the inspiration behind this quiet, moody Merlot evocative of the gauzy filtered light of an early morning landscape or fireworks exploding in a misty night sky. A smooth, voluptuous wine bursting with notes of rainier cherries, pomegranate and wild strawberries. 15 months aging in French oak lend a hint of bubblegum and vanilla on the finish. Pair with earthy dishes such as vegan meatloaf, mushroom wellington, or grilled eggplant. Or just sink into your easy chair next to the fire and sip on this.

  • Rimbaud Cabernet Franc

Notes: bright, red cherry, plum, black raspberry

Arthur Rimbaud was one of the most important French poets of the late 19th century. A child prodigy, he penned all of his major works by the time he was 20 years old, at which point he abandoned poetry entirely, briefly enlisting as a soldier in the Dutch Colonial Army before trying his hand at being a foreman, trader and then gun-runner in Cyprus, Yemen and Ethiopia. In this recently discovered photograph, he appears as if from the ether, defiantly perched on a plinth after he and his comrades have just toppled a statue of Napoleon during the short-lived but bloody Paris Commune of 1870-71.

Rimbaud the hedonist, the golden muse, lives on in this Lake Michigan Shore Cabernet Franc aged one year in French oak, evoking notes of ripe red cherry, black raspberry, plum, stone and vanilla. Pair with lasagna, stuffed peppers or baba ghanoush. “Behold, it ends with angels of flame and of ice!”

Cleared of his charges, Apollinaire enlisted in WWI to redeem his name. He wrote poetry in the trenches with bombs exploding around him. The photograph on the label shows Apollinaire with his bandaged head after his injury.

Blended with a small amount of Traminette to boost aromatics, this is an expressive wine with notes of black cherry, spices and warm cedar, with a touch of vanilla and caramel on the finish. Pair with BBQ, grilled vegetables, or Mediterranean cuisine.

  • 2022 Nerval Syrah

    Notes: expressive, lilac, spices, vanilla

Gérard de Nerval was a French Romantic writer best known for his novellas Sylvie and Aurélia, and exerted a major influence on luminaries such as Marcel Proust, Victor Hugo, André Breton and Joseph Cornell. Nerval’s father was a military doctor who served in Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. Nerval’s mother, who followed her husband into war, died when Nerval was just two years old. Plagued by this early trauma, Nerval channeled his creative energies into his writing but was beset by episodes of depression. He was known to have a pet lobster named Thibault that he walked around the streets of Paris on a blue silk ribbon.

In this photograph, Nerval gazes out at us from the depths of his beleaguered soul, cigar clutched in his hands, inspiring this moody, serious wine – a Lake Michigan Shore Syrah aged one year in French oak, conjuring up notes of black cherry, cocoa powder, espresso bean, leather and black pepper. Pair with stuffed eggplant or roasted parsnip and sweet potato tart.
